The new house plans by our latest Signature designers, Yamaguchi Martin Architects, sport crisply contemporary gables, multifunctional great rooms, seamless connections to decks and courtyards for relaxing and entertaining, and extra amenities like a studio/home office. The goal for each design is "simple living with just what we need,” using sustainable techniques to achieve healthy living, while keeping construction, operation, and maintenance costs to a minimum.

Plan 933-7, shown below and at the top of this post, has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths and includes a basement

recreation room. The centerpiece of the long linear plan is the great room, with kitchen island at one end,

adjacent to the door to the garage. Note the long horizontal kitchen window that becomes a vista-framing backsplash. The studio office is just off the entry and can also function as a
guest room. Two bedrooms are upstairs and a third
is in the basement next to the recreation room; these latter spaces are brightened by light wells. The building shell is super insulated and uses a double-wall 2x4 construction and durable metal wall panels on the exterior reduce long term maintenance costs. The house was designed on a two-foot building grid using standard dimensions to reduce waste and time in construction. The long roof slope works well for solar panels.

Plan 933-3 is an even simpler one story version, where the great room opening to a patio is at the

center, with a bedroom and a bath at each end. This design would work well as a starter home or getaway cabin.

Glass folding doors can open one wall of the great room to the patio for entertaining on warm days. The

kitchen occupies an alcove off the great room by the front of the house. The glass backsplash beside the sink lets whoever is in the kitchen see guests arriving at the front door.

In Plan 933-4 the architects take a more traditional tack, with a stucco and stone exterior, eyebrow dormer

windows, and a timber-framed pergola. A split layout puts the master suite in its own wing on the ground floor

and the other two bedrooms upstairs. The laundry is conveniently located between closet and bathroom in the master suite.

Plan 933-2 adds a little more romance with an eclectic "European Country Cottage" look, complete with shed

dormer, shutters, and a balustrade edging the porch by the front door. One particularly eye-catching feature

is the curved glass window wall forming a dining alcove off the kitchen. The efficient layout shows how

the house opens to outdoor living spaces on two sides. The ground floor office can double as a guest room. The master suite and another bedroom are upstairs.

The firm's designs are all about keeping rooms simple and compact and eliminating wasteful circulation. At the same time they look for ways to add a unique space or quality to give each design personality -- as you can see in the Monopoly house-like studio, the glass backsplash, and curvilinear dining room in the plans shown here. Welcome to the team, Yamaguchi Martin!
