Meet our latest contemporary cabin by new Signature designer Ignas Stancikas of Truoba. The 2 bedroom 2 bath design, which is Plan 924-2, includes a central great room opening to a generous porch
that wraps around the house on three sides. The porch is covered in one section and open in another, thereby offering a choice of shelter or sun while enjoying the fresh air. Ignas says: "I wanted to design a smaller, combined version of a ranch house and a modern cabin." He decided to make it fully in wood to be compatible with country and mountain sites where vacation cabins might be built. He also designed
it to be as flexible as possible, with several variations -- for example, the home office can become a third bedroom. The room at the top of each plan is a combined laundry/utility space with its own sink. The porch is accessible from the entrance, the main living area, and the master suite; in other words it is a large porch with a house attached. Inside, the great room feels airy and spacious;
the library/office alcove shown in this view can become the third bedroom. Doors and windows on two
sides of the kitchen, which is at one end of the great room, add to the feeling of openness.
The cabin recalls the early modern work of California architects like William Wurster, who designed this
camp-like vacation retreat for an isolated site in the mountains east of Oakland, California in 1938 (photo by Roger Sturtevant courtesy Online Archive of California). Compare that design's central open-air living room with Ignas' house-wrapping porch. The work of famous nature-oriented architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and Alvar Aalto -- both of whom William Wurster knew, incidentally -- provided inspiration for Ignas' design work.
Igans has also launched another new design, the somewhat larger 3 bedroom 2.5 bath one-story
Plan 624-1. The split plan puts the master suite in one wing and the two smaller bedrooms in the other.
The wings intersect at the great room, which opens to an outdoor living room complete with fireplace. Inside, openness dominates, thanks to high ceilings, tall windows, a two-sided fireplace dividing living from dining areas, and a partition between the dining area the spacious home office. Again multiple porches and decks expand the house in good weather and give every major room a strong connection to nature.
Bravo Ignas, and welcome to Houseplans' Exclusive Architect & Designer Directory!
