A ranch home can be any size. It all depends on what you need. Empty-nesters seeking to downsize will probably prefer a small ranch layout--something under 2,000 sq. ft. On the other hand, a large family might need 3,000 sq. ft. or more. Some of our most popular designs fall between 1,500 and 2,500 sq. ft.
Minimal stairs! A home with minimal stairs can make aging in place easier and safer.
In general, ranch-style homes require larger lots than two-story homes. And land is expensive. So if you're working with a tight budget, or you're thinking of building in an area where land is scarce, a two-story house might be your best bet. Having said that, you'll see several small ranch-style designs below that are 40' wide or less.
