At a holiday like Christmas everyone wants to help with the big meal and that means everyone is usually in the kitchen. So why not make the space work for entertaining as well as cooking. Islands and peninsulas separating the prep space from the entertaining space work best, as shown in Plan 48-433, above, and the following examples.

Plan 132-207 uses an island and a peninsula to separate activity zones.


In Plan 51-458 the wrap-around island effectively separates the cooking area from the entertaining zone without blocking sight lines -- so you can share a glass of wine with your host without getting in his or her way.
